Keeping Traditions Alive: How Flores de Mayo Bridges Communities Through Connection

JUNE 2026, MANILA, Philippines — Every May, communities across the Philippines come together to celebrate Flores de Mayo, a cherished tradition that honors the Blessed Virgin Mary through prayer, flowers, and the much-anticipated Sagala procession.
In Lalamove’s Flores de LALA Digital Series, there’s a barangay in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga, where their annual celebration remains a vibrant expression of faith, culture, and community spirit. While the tradition has evolved over the years, it continues to serve as a significant gathering that brings residents together across generations.
The digital series, which spotlights people behind such a tradition, aims to support barangays in Luzon by recognizing the work behind the annual tradition while providing financial assistance for community-led festivities.
This year, community organizers are preparing for a milestone Sagala celebration. For the first time, the barangay will celebrate it on a larger scale, inspiring volunteers, families, and participants to make the event more meaningful and memorable.
At the center of the preparations is Zoren Manarang, coordinator for the parish pastoral ministry, who has been working closely with residents, church leaders, and the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) to ensure everything comes together smoothly. He’s also one of the beneficiaries of Flores de LALA.
For Manarang, the Sagala has always been more than a procession. It’s a tradition that unites generations, encourages participation, and strengthens the bond of the community.
“In our barangay, we practice a very traditional and collaborative Flores de Mayo,” he shared. “The parents in the neighborhood will register their children, volunteers will help with preparations, and everyone contributes in their own way.”
Organizing Flores de Mayo takes careful planning, from coordinating the procession to managing participants. Despite the challenges, the community’s support and cooperation help keep the tradition alive every year.

This spirit of collaboration reflects a value deeply rooted in Filipino communities: traditions endure when people come together to support one another.
Manarang sees this value in the way people stay connected through logistics. By coordinating deliveries from Nueva Ecija to Pampanga and Metro Manila, he has learned how services like Lalamove help bridge distances, particularly when sourcing items from faraway suppliers.
Just as members of the community rely on one another to prepare costumes, props, flowers, and decorations for the Sagala, many Filipinos depend on trusted delivery services to bridge distances and ensure important items arrive where they are needed.
This is the message behind Lalamove’s Flores de LALA campaign: community celebrations are made possible by the many people working together behind the scenes. By helping connect people and resources across different locations, logistics services also play a role in keeping traditions alive.
“Flores de Mayo is about bringing people together. Through Flores de LALA, we want to recognize not only the tradition but also the people whose efforts help make these celebrations possible,” said Djon Nacario, Managing Director of Lalamove Philippines.
From the neighborhood community, youth leaders, and church volunteers, Flores de Mayo is a reminder that traditions are sustained through shared effort. In a time when the spirit of bayanihan remains as relevant as ever, every contribution—whether through volunteering, organizing, or simply helping connect people and resources—plays a role in preserving the celebrations that define Filipino communities.
For the residents of Barangay Maimpis, this year’s Flores de Mayo is more than a tradition. It is a celebration of community and a shared commitment to keeping it alive for future generations.
