SEC promotes financial education to Tarlac college students

To empower college students through financial education, the Securities and Exchange Commission- Tarlac Extension Office (SEC-TAREO) organized a seminar focused on financial literacy and investment scam prevention held on March 14 at Osias Colleges, Inc. in Tarlac City. The event aimed to equip young adults with the skills necessary to navigate the complex world of personal finance and investment safely.

More than 300 college students attended the seminar led by SEC-TAREO lawyers, Director Richard R. Laus and Securities Counsel Ma. Theresa L. Reotutar. Held in two sessions, the event highlighted the importance of personal finance which will help them to manage and control their funds and investments wisely. The SEC lawyers also provided invaluable insights into recognizing and avoiding common investment scams targeting innocent individuals, particularly college students. Through interactive presentations, real-life case studies, and open discussions, student participants gained a deeper understanding of the warning signs of fraudulent schemes and how to protect themselves from falling victim to financial fraud.

“We believe that empowering college students with financial literacy is crucial in safeguarding their financial futures,” Director Laus said.

“By educating them about the risks associated with investment scams and providing them with practical tools to make informed financial decisions, we aim to foster a generation of financially savvy individuals who can confidently explore the investment landscape,” he added.

The seminar covered a wide range of topics, including the importance of conducting thorough research before making investment decisions, understanding the difference between legitimate investments and fraudulent schemes, and recognizing red flags such as guaranteed high returns and pressure to invest quickly.

“Our students left with not only a newfound understanding of financial literacy but also a sense of empowerment and confidence in their ability to safeguard their financial well-being against potential scams,” stated Rachel Iraola, Vice President for Administration of Osias Colleges, Inc.

With financial scams becoming increasingly sophisticated and prevalent, SEC investor education campaigns play a crucial role in raising awareness and empowering individuals to protect themselves and their finances. By partnering with educational institutions and reaching out to young adults, the SEC aims to instill a culture of financial responsibility and resilience, ensuring that college students are well-prepared to make sound financial decisions both now and in the future.
