History of the UA AB Communication Program and the Mis-En-Scene Film Festival
The AB Communication Program of the University of the Assumption (UA) was established with the mission to form competent, creative, and socially responsible communicators grounded in Catholic values. Since its inception, the program has championed academic excellence and practical experience in the fields of journalism, broadcasting, digital media, and film. Rooted in the university’s mission of truth-seeking, service, and cultural engagement, the program has continuously evolved to meet the demands of an ever-changing media landscape.
As part of its commitment to holistic and experiential learning, the program launched the Mis-En- Scene Film Festival in 2005. Initially a classroom-based output presentation, the festival gradually evolved into a full-scale institutional event that celebrates the creativity and technical skill of student filmmakers. Each year, the festival showcases original short films written, directed, and produced by AB Communication students, tackling themes that range from personal struggles and societal issues to cultural narratives and values formation.
Now celebrating its 20th year, the Mis-En-Scene Film Festival stands as one of the longest-running student film festivals in Pampanga. It has become a dynamic platform for students to exhibit their storytelling abilities and filmmaking prowess—combining theory and practice through hands-on experience in scriptwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, and production management.
Over the years, the festival has also opened opportunities for students to engage with professional filmmakers, media practitioners, and alumni through talkbacks, panel discussions, and mentorships. Many of its participants have gone on to pursue careers in media, advertising, broadcasting, and film—bringing with them the values and vision nurtured by the program.
This year’s milestone edition of Mis-En-Scene aims to go even bigger, with plans to partner with national institutions, invite industry collaborators, and widen its reach to audiences beyond the university. As the AB Communication Program continues to grow, so does its passion to empower students not only as storytellers but as changemakers in society through the art of film. #
