In a groundbreaking move, the Bulacan Press Club Inc. (BPCI) has launched its first online streaming radio program. Spearheaded by its president, Mr. Omar Padilla, this initiative aims to uphold journalistic integrity and adapt to the evolving media landscape by utilizing digital platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok. The program, titled Usapang Bulakenyo, is set to deliver credible news and updates to Bulakenyos and Filipinos worldwide.
Mr. Padilla emphasized the importance of maintaining credibility amidst the rampant spread of misinformation online.
“We may be starting with our ‘numbers’ online, but we are confident that we have a very important message to share with our audience—it’s our credibility that has kept us going all these years,” he stated.
He further highlighted BPCI’s commitment to empowering its members and opening its doors to influencers who wish to learn from seasoned professionals in journalism.
The Bulacan Press Club Inc., established in 1952 during a pivotal era for Philippine journalism, has long been a bastion of ethical reporting. Its foundation coincided with efforts by prominent journalists like Teodoro Valencia and Domingo Abadilla to organize the national press under President Elpidio Quirino’s administration. Over the decades, BPCI has adhered to core principles of journalistic ethics: seeking truth, minimizing harm, acting independently, and being accountable. These values remain critical as the organization transitions into the digital age.
In today’s climate of disinformation, BPCI’s move is timely and necessary. By leveraging digital platforms, it aims to counteract the spread of fake news while fostering responsible journalism practices. The inclusion of influencers in its membership underscores the club’s recognition of their growing role in shaping public opinion online.
Jopay Solas, a guest member of BPCI and founder of Cooltura—a digital PR and media consultancy—praised the initiative as an opportunity for local content creators to shine.
“Most mainstream news comes from NCR [National Capital Region], and they often struggle to localize their content,” Solas remarked. He will lead digital training sessions for BPCI members, equipping them with strategies to create impactful and engaging content tailored for diverse audiences.
The launch of Usapang Bulakenyo was graced by notable leaders and dignitaries who expressed their support for BPCI’s mission. Among them were Governor Daniel R. Fernando, Vice Governor Alex Castro, City Vice Mayor Migs Bautista of Malolos, Bishop Rene Gomez, representatives from various districts including Atty. Lyvette D. San Diego for Cong. Danny A. Domingo, Cong. Salvador A. Pleyto from the 6th District, and DE2 Engr. George Santos.
As Usapang Bulakenyo begins streaming online, it marks a new chapter to ensure credible reporting reaches wider audiences. This initiative is not just about adapting to technological advancements; it is about preserving journalistic values in an era where truth often competes with sensationalism.
With its rich legacy and renewed focus on digital platforms, the Bulacan Press Club Inc. is poised to lead by example in promoting responsible journalism—a vital endeavor in today’s information-driven society. #
