POLPhil: Forging Inclusive Alliances in Pursuit of Enduring Peace

The Political Officers League of the Philippines (POLPhil) is calling on progressive mass organizations to unite and develop a people’s agenda for genuine peace, emphasizing the need for broad public participation in peace talks. POLPhil acknowledges the challenges faced by civilians in conflict situations, stressing the impact on lives and livelihoods.

Noel Medina, POLPhil NCR Vice President, highlights the historical challenges in peace talks between the government and the National Democratic Front, citing past administrations’ struggles. The group advocates for a comprehensive peace process, involving various political forces and organizations, to address the root causes of conflict, such as poverty and injustice.

Medina states, “We want the broad population to participate in the peace talks, mainly affected by the armed conflict.”

POLPhil, composed of former activists, military officers, and freedom fighters, emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in pursuing peace. While acknowledging past achievements in Mindanao, they assert the need for a broader coalition to achieve national peace. POLPhil’s acting National President, Rudy “Kid” Cañeda, underscores the necessity of involving diverse stakeholders in justice and peace efforts.

Cañeda emphasizes that the peace process should prioritize the people’s agenda, focusing on issues like poverty, powerlessness, justice, food security, jobs, and education. The group urges President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to reconsider resuming peace talks with the National Democratic Front, despite concerns raised by Vice President Sara Duterte.

Cañeda emphasizes, “The broadest possible range of stakeholders must be involved in any endeavor that seeks to bring about justice and peace.”

POLPhil plans to hold a press conference with various political figures, government officials, military personnel, and peace advocates to build a Broad Unity of all Peace Stakeholders, emphasizing a collective effort towards meaningful and inclusive national progress and peace.
