More than 200 young people launched mangroves planting and clean up drive in Alangan, Limay
By Nuclear/Coal-Free Bataan Movement
The final event of the three-part mangrove tree planting and coastal clean-up series took place on Sunday, May 4, in Barangay Alangan, Limay, Bataan, under the theme “Restore our seas, Restore our planet.”
Organized annually by the Nuclear/Coal-Free Bataan Movement (NFBM) and Young Bataeños for Environmental Advocacy Network (YoungBEAN), the initiative aims to engage the public-especially the youth-in ocean protection and to strengthen solidarity with local fisherfolk for marine biodiversity sustainability.

This last event partnered with Concentrix Alabang 1, 2, 3 and MOA, whose employees made up about 250 of the nearly 300 participants. The activity also raised awareness about broader environmental issues such as plastic pollution and the impacts of coal and nuclear power on local ecosystems, with NFBM and YoungBEAN advocating for sustainable practices and urging prioritization of environmental protection over industrial interests.

Mangroves are critical to marine biodiversity, serving as the ecological backbone of coastal and marine ecosystems worldwide. Their preservation and restoration are vital for maintaining healthy oceans and supporting livelihoods dependent on marine resources.
In Bataan, only a few hectares of mangroves remain, threatened by issues including the reclamation of Manila Bay, rapid urbanization, and the expansion of fossil fuel projects. In response, NFBM and YoungBEAN have intensified efforts through these initiatives to raise awareness and help preserve the remaining mangrove areas for the sustainability and future of coming generations.

The group has actively encouraged participants to engage in direct actions that promote the welfare of our environment. By involving themselves in activities such as mangrove planting, coastal clean-ups, and community awareness campaigns, participants not only contribute to the restoration and protection of vital ecosystems but also become advocates for sustainable living. Through these hands-on experiences, the group fosters a deeper connection to nature and empowers individuals-especially the youth-to take responsibility and lead initiatives that safeguard our planet for future generations.
The initiative was also in partnership with Pangisda Pilipinas, KaBaRo, Youth for Nationalism and Democracy in cooperation with the local fisherfolk association of Alangan and the Local Barangay Council of Alangan, Limay.
