Let’s ESCONnect: Taking sTEPs to a sustainable future
In the era of technology and innovation, the fast-changing momentum of advancement carries consumers into the inconspicuous bubble of disposing and replacing electronic devices just to keep up with trends. As a consequence, electronic waste (e-waste) continues to grow and poses an imminent hazard from mishandled chemicals and parts of the devices. Each upgraded device is a progress towards an innovative future; yet, it also leads to a breakthrough at the cost of tomorrow.
But a single step of difference opens the path to change.
The E-Waste Project (TEP) has embarked on its advocacy and journey to educate the community about the rising e-waste crisis and promote the proper management and disposal of e-waste. For this year’s iteration, TEP has taken the initiative of promoting sustainability through a month-long series of events featuring educational sessions and collection drives. In particular, the month consisted of the informative TEP Caravan held at FEU Institute of Technology, the TEPTalk live webinar that discussed the e-waste crisis, and the two-week Collection Drive for e-waste donations.
Upon reaching the conclusion of its 13th year and to further expand the campaign for a greener future, TEP organized the Electronics Sustainability Convention (ESCON) 2025. By highlighting various events in the convention, ESCON 2025 elevates its advocacy through interactive and informative stages. This momentous day consists of four main events: the Symposium, the Case Presentation Competition, the Round Table Discussion, and the Digital Art Contest.
The Symposium congregates reputable professionals from the industry, academe, and established companies for an educational talk regarding the state of e-waste crisis and management in the Philippines. This event sets a platform to connect the youth and students with professionals and experts in the country.
The Case Presentation Contest is a competition where a team of at least two high school or college undergraduate students can participate and partake in an innovative solution to the e-waste crisis. It is an event where the students plan and strategize solutions for a given set of problem statements, then present their project and answer the queries related to their case.
The Round Table Discussion, the concluding program for ESCON, is a segment that integrates the ideas, talks, and activities in the convention. This event sets out the stage for collaborative brainstorming and the development of feasible systems and plans centered on proper e-waste disposal and management. By uniting the youthful creativity of students and the diverse expertise of professionals, this discussion lays the foundation for viable ideas, propositions, and connections.
For the Digital Art Contest, the awarding ceremony for the winning participants will be held at ESCON 2025. This year’s predominant advocates, who showed both creativity and mindfulness in e-waste management, are Lester John Lequisen, Julienne Reign Gosing, and Rae Allenson Esteban.
Mark your calendars and take the chance for ESCON 2025 this coming August 23 at the Engineering Theater, Melchor Hall, in UP Diliman, from 8:30 AM onwards, with free registration for all at https://tinyurl.com/ESCON-Registration-Form. With advocates, collaborators, experts, and stakeholders, this convention is a day of meaningful discourse, a showcase of innovations, and a synergy of ideas.
