How Zumba brings Bulakenyos together for fun and fitness
Cooltura by Jeoff “Jopay” Solas
In Bulacan, Zumba has become more than just a workout; it’s a celebration of friendship, health, and community spirit. With the rise of Zumba as a popular workout trend, I have witnessed firsthand how this lively dance fitness program has captured the hearts of many Bulakenyos.
Just like today, it may be ordinary, but there’s something refreshing about how I choose to end it. As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, I find myself gearing up for a Zumba session with my neighborhood friends—whom I fondly refer to as my “beshies”—Crisel, May, Flor and Susan are thrilled to attend today’s session with ZIN Arjay Dubiao. He is one of our favorite ZINs and some may notice our biases since beyond his looks are his playful choreographs or routines that thrills most of the attendees.
Just like my friends, there are many Zumba groups that have spread all over the province, as expected right after holidays in order to either lose weight or catch up from our usual chats. It’s a delightful ritual that transforms the mundane into something extraordinary, where laughter and music fill the air, and we shake off the day’s stresses together.
In our bustling barangays, where fitness centers may seem too cramped to accommodate the growing number of Zumba enthusiasts, we’ve creatively adapted. Outdoor spaces like basketball courts and open fields have become our dance floors. Imagine a sea of neon tights and colorful workout gear, with laughter and music filling the air as we sway to infectious beats. It’s a sight to behold—men and women of all ages, from energetic children to spirited seniors, coming together for a shared purpose: to have fun while getting fit. This is so popular that sometimes even our mayors and other local leaders often sponsor it, comparable to a basketball league.
The beauty of Zumba lies in its inclusivity. Early morning classes attract our beloved seniors, eager to start their day with energy and camaraderie. Meanwhile, the working crowd joins us in the evenings, transforming after-work stress into joyful movement. The affordability of these sessions makes them accessible to everyone; it’s a small investment for a wealth of health benefits and social interaction.
I often find myself leading these sessions alongside some of the most inspiring Zumba instructors in our community—ZINs (Zumba Instructors Network)—who bring their unique flair and passion to each class. Their energy is contagious, motivating us all to push our limits while having an absolute blast. Whether it’s through high-energy routines or slower-paced sessions designed for those easing into fitness, these instructors create an environment where everyone feels welcome.
What truly warms my heart is seeing friendships blossom during these classes. As we dance together under the sun or beneath the stars, barriers fade away. New residents often join us hesitant at first but quickly find themselves embraced by the community. They share stories, laughter, and sometimes even snacks after class—a perfect segue into deeper connections over coffee or dinner dates that follow our workouts.
The atmosphere is electric; it feels like a celebration with every beat drop. We sweat off our worries while grooving to a popular playlist that includes KPOP, POP and Latin rhythms often popularized by TikTok that make you want to move your feet. It’s not just an exercise; it’s an experience that stimulates both body and spirit. The joy of dancing together creates bonds that extend beyond the basketball court—friends become family in this shared journey towards health.
As I look around during our sessions, I see a beautiful tapestry of ages and backgrounds coming together for one purpose: wellness. The sound of laughter mingles with upbeat music as we follow our instructors’ lead, forgetting about the stresses of daily life for just an hour. It’s refreshing to witness how Zumba has become more than just a workout; it’s a catalyst for positive change within our community, and yet this comes so cheap.
So why not join us? If you’re new to Bulacan or simply looking for a fun way to stay active, come dance with us! Our classes are designed for everyone—no experience necessary!
