Filipina Nurse May Parsons Celebrated at London Barrio Fiesta, Named First OET Global Ambassador

Hounslow, London โ€“ The 146th Philippine Independence Day celebrations at Lampton Park’s London Barrio Fiesta were graced by the presence of May Parsons, a distinguished Filipina nurse and industry leader based in the UK. May, who gained global recognition for administering the world’s first COVID-19 vaccination in December 2020, joined the festivities to express her solidarity with her fellow Filipinos.

In a special moment during today’s program, May Parsons, a native of Tarlac, was awarded a plaque of appreciation for her outstanding contributions to healthcare and her role as an inspirational figure within the Filipino community.

Adding to the momentous occasion, May Parsons has been named the first OET (Occupational English Test) Global Ambassador. Her journey from Tarlac to the forefront of global healthcare is a testament to her dedication and leadership. May’s significant contribution to healthcare was recognized with the George Cross, the highest honor awarded to civilians in the UK, making her the first Filipino recipient of this prestigious award.

A proud alumna of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Nursing, May graduated in 2000 and has dedicated over 20 years to the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. Currently, she serves as the Associate Chief Nurse and Director for Risk, Governance, and Compliance at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

May’s new role as OET Global Ambassador highlights her exemplary achievements and leadership within the healthcare industry. Her story embodies the values and mission of OET, demonstrating how hard work, determination, and effective communication skills can lead to professional success. May emphasizes the importance of strong English skills in delivering compassionate care, leading teams, and mentoring others.

“I want to encourage healthcare professionals to be equipped with foundational skills, like language mastery, for a fulfilling career wherever it takes you. Having an excellent command of medical English can open new doors of opportunities on the global stage while allowing healthcare workers to connect deeper with their patients and deliver impeccable care,” said May.

In late 2023, OET CEO Sujata Stead and May announced her ambassadorship at a conference in the Philippines, highlighting her role as an inspiration and role model for the next generation of nurses worldwide.

“May is a true inspiration and role model for the next generation of nurses in the Philippines and around the world. She represents a shining example of what can be achieved with tenacity, a passionate commitment to making the world a better place, and of course, impeccable communication skills,” said Sujata Stead.

As the OET Global Ambassador, May will provide valuable insights and advice to healthcare professionals globally, raising awareness about how OET can support them in becoming globally competent professionals.

“I feel really privileged to be the OET Global Ambassador. I want to inspire healthcare professionals to think about developing themselves and building relationships and connections with their patients and colleagues,” May expressed.

The London Barrio Fiesta’s celebration of Philippine Independence Day was indeed marked by pride and inspiration, with May Parsons embodying the spirit of excellence and dedication that resonates with Filipinos both in the homeland and abroad.
